Details, Updates, & Reminders
Calendar change: Pending board approval on March 3 of the superintendent’s inclement weather make-up plan, the DSA finals schedule for second semester will change as will graduation date. As soon as a plan is approved, DSA will notify the school community.
Grade deadlines approaching: Nine week grade posting is fast approaching. Students, make sure you are staying on top of homework and submitting all assignments on time. With March being a very busy month of preparing and performing for the largest production of the year, students must truly prioritize their activities.
Gifted Program Survey: Please provide your feedback on the gifted program; survey deadline is March 10, 2014.
DCSD Plan for GA Flexibility Options
Thank you to all the parents who attended community input sessions related to the flexibility options that DCSD is considering. The Flexibility Advisory Committee (FAC) plans to complete an executive summary for Superintendent Thurmond by mid-March. Mr. Thurmond will make a decision and recommendation to the Board of Education. DeKalb plans to file a letter of intent by May 1, 2014, notifying the Georgia DOE whether DeKalb will choose status quo (no waivers from state law), IE2 (system may request waivers for specific flexibility options), and charter system (system must allow local school governance and flexibility). Details and feedback.

Volunteer hours reporting form
- Board of Education candidate qualifying is next week. There are seven districts, roughly the same as the current seven districts, less super-districts. (The DeKalb Delegation proposed map with long narrow districts was not approved in time to make it through the legislature for qualifying.)
- The resolution allowing cities to create their own school districts did not make it to the House floor. There were not enough votes for it to pass. Due to high levels of support the resolution is likely to be considered again next year.
- Druid Hills Charter Cluster (DHCC) leaders met with Superintendent Thurmond last week. DHCC leaders are hopeful that the meeting has started a dialogue that will lead to reconsideration of their charter petition.
- Parent Councils United (PCU) is responding to issues facing schools with a recommendation to the Flexibility Advisory Committee and a letter to Mr. Thurmond and upcoming events including a PCU town hall meeting and a BOE candidate forum. The meeting last weekend kicked off these actions; watch for more information.
