Reminders and Updates

♪ A friendly reminder that the latest time to check out students is 2:45pm; please plan accordingly.

Legislation and Advocacy

Mark your calendars for the upcoming Emory LaVista Parent Council meeting featuring the State of the System address with Superintendent Michael Thurmond.  The meeting will take place at Druid Hills High School on September 17th.  Refreshments at 6:00 PM and the meeting begins at 6:30 PM.

Over the summer, our school system received a letter from SACS stating that we have made progress on our goals.  Most people (including Michael Thurmond) feel that we will not lose our accreditation when SACS returns for their official visit in December.

Also over the summer, an administrative judge heard arguments regarding the Governor’s removal of DeKalb’s BOE members.  Five out of the six removed argued that they should get their jobs back.  The administrative judge agreed with the Governor, so the members will not be reinstated and they will not continue on the County payroll.  Eugene Walker has filed a lawsuit that will be decided by the Georgia Supreme Court.

Leaders of DeKalb County’s parent councils recently met for their second Parent Councils United (PCU) summit. PCU is working with Michael Thurmond on a family engagement initiative. The group is also focusing on the 2014 Board of Education elections.

The DSA Foundation

The DSA Foundation, Inc.  is a non-profit 501c3 that was formed in 2012 as a way to support the arts departments at DeKalb School of the Arts.  It is able to raise large sums of money that can be used to hire personnel, equipment, and materials needed by the arts departments at DSA High School.  In addition to donations which are happily received, the foundation can apply for grants and other monies.

The DSA Foundation is NOT a replacement of the DSA PTSA.  The founders of the Foundation—Florena Oliver, Rivka Elbein, and Sue Briss are former DSA PTSA officers and understand the vital role the PTSA plays in support of the school.

Our first major fundraiser is coming soon!
